About
I am eight-years old and live in Durham, North Carolina with my parents and my twin sister Beätrice. I love music. I have studied violin for three years with Candida Yoshikai, piano for two years, initially with Janice Philbrick and now with Greg McCallum, and cello for one year with Leonid Zilper. I have also been studying music composition for one year with Julie Harris. In addition, I like to play ukulele, guitar, mandolin, drums and anything else I can get my hands on. I love going to concerts and listening to lots of different music. Recently, I've listened to music by Bach, Telemann, Beethoven, Bartók, Kurtág, Dohnányi, Cage, Cowell and Hovhaness. Right now my favorite is Bartók; I especially love the allegro non troppo from the second violin concerto. Besides music, I'm interested in lots of things. I love ancient history, especially Egypt, Greece and Rome (I've written a suite of pieces about Ancient Egypt you can hear on this website). I like to learn about animals, including dinosaurs and dangerous animals like lions and sharks (and ligers—a huge cat that you get when you cross a male lion with a female tiger). Lately, I've been really into learning about birds and I have been writing pieces on all the birds that interest me (the set is called Argumentum Ornithologicum, you can hear some of them here). Natural disasters like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes are always fascinating for me. I think I've checked out every book the Durham County Library owns about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79! Recently, I have also gotten really interested in Math. I'm trying to learn Algebra and get my dad to explain what Calculus is about (I'm home schooled, so it's his job). Finally, I'm a green belt in Aikido.
